Volunteering & Activism
Volunteering and a connection with community has always been important to me.
Between 1998 and 2000, I was a Trustee for the charity RainbowYOUTH which helps LGBTQ+ young people in New Zealand.
I volunteered with Barnardo’s UK, working on a range of projects with young people as both a Befriender and an Independent Visitor (IV) from 2006 to 2020.
I’m an advocate for Universal Basic Income (UBI). I’ve been a Fellow at the RSA since 2014.
And I support the charities Stonewall and Black Lives Matter.
I’m also a Trans Ally. In 2020, I left my literary agency with three other authors, over transgender rights. You can read about it in this Guardian article.
During Covid-19, I worked with local community groups to mobilise support and deliver prescriptions to vulnerable people. Through Age UK, I helped deliver food to older people unable to shop for themselves.
I’m currently interested in taking on a Trustee role in London at a non profit organisation or charity. Please contact me if you have a relevant opportunity.
